A fig is a delicious and soft fruit with delicate skin that can be either green or purple. However, the flesh of a fig is mainly red, and the whole of the fruit is edible. Fig is commonly known as Anjeer, and its local name can vary according to the regions in India. Fig Anjeer is mainly popular for commercial use. 

If we discuss it in simple terms, they do not initially look like a fruit, mainly when they are unripe or immature. Fig trees don’t grow like apples and peaches or their flowers. Fig Anjeer fruits are mainly converted by flowers and bloom inside the pear-shaped seed, which later matures into the fruit. You can eat Fresh figs raw, but you can also peel them if you wish. You can eat them after cutting them off the stem. Farmers have to look after them from start to end. As we saw many farmers used to plough their farms well with effective farm vehicles. Fig Anjeer Mostly Grown In India

In India, the Fig Anjeer is considered a commercial crop for cultivation commonly. Therefore, the fig is mainly limited grown to the Western Parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow & Saharanpur), Karnataka (Bellary, Chitradurga & Srirangapatna), and Tamilnadu (Coimbatore).

The total area fig cultivation covers in India is around 5600 hectares of land with nearly 13,802 thousand tonnes, i.e. approximately 12.32 tonnes per hectare.

In the United States, most figs have grown for commercial use in California, as the fig fruit does not allow cold temperatures. However, outside North America, Fig Anjeer are grown worldwide, including Algeria, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Morocco, Spain, Turkey and many top producers in warm regions.

Varieties Of Fig Trees And Fruits

Although there are over 700 named varieties of fig trees across the world. All 700 varieties of the Fig Anjeer fruits and trees mainly fall into four fig categories:

Caprifigs: The category of caprifigs only grows male flowers and never bears fruit. Their only purpose to grow is to breed female fig trees. 

Smyrna: The category of Smyrna figs has all-female flowers. Therefore, they are usually bred by the caprifigs. 

San Pedro: The category of San Pedro figs produces two fruits: one on leafless mature wood that requires no fertilization, and the other one is new wood that needs fertilization by a male flower such as Smyrna. 

Common Fig Anjeer: Common figs are the common variety mainly grown in home landscapes. They don’t need pollination. Common figs don’t need an opening, so they are less sensitive to decay caused by insects and rainwater accessing the fruit.

Planting Fig Trees

  • Figs can be planted outdoors in warmer zones. In regions where winter temperatures get colder than -12°C for periods, figs can’t be grown well outdoors, but they are best grown in containers and kept inside for the winter.
  • For outdoor fig trees, plant the tree in the spring or early fall in full sun. Fig trees can grow in most soil types as long as the soil is well-drained and includes lots of organic material. 
  • Space should be between fig trees at least 20 feet away from any other trees.
  • Fig Anjeer trees dig down deep roots, so have that in mind when choosing a planting place.

Harvesting Figs

  • It would help if you harvested figs only when fully ripe and should be fully coloured and soft to the touch.
  • When picking figs, you must wear gloves or long sleeves because the substance from the fig tree can irritate or burn your skin.
  • Figs are very perishable in nature after picking from the trees. Store figs in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
  • For long-term usage, you can freeze figs for later use. Another storage and long term usage method is to dry the figs. You can also use dried figs.
