Face Yoga is the science and practice of stimulating your facial muscles to improve blood flow to the face. Face yoga comprises different exercises and poses that can target stress prone areas in your pace: muscles around your jaws, eyebrows, mouth, eyes, and forehead.

Face yoga for dark circles aims to help in the treatment of dark circles, which is a big problem in today’s lifestyle in both men and women.

What are dark circles?

Medically called hyperpigmentation, dark circles refer to the multiple round homogenous pigment spots that develop below the eyes. Though this is not a health concern nor does it harm your body in any way, dark circles can have a very bad effect on your visual appearance, making your face look tired and older. This is of special concern to women.

This way, dark circles can interfere with your normal personal, professional and social life and can greatly decrease your quality of life. That this is a widespread and common problem in today’s world is testified by the prevalence of a large number and variety of cosmetic products promising to treat dark circles.

What causes dark circles?

Aging: Loss of elasticity of the skin that occurs with age causes bagginess and dark circles under the eyes.

Hereditary: The tendency for developing dark circles sometimes runs within families, and can be due to their genetic makeup.

Lack of sleep: This is one of the most important reasons why dark circles happen. Lack of sleep leads to the dilation of blood vessels under the eyes and makes the area appear dark. Dilation of blood vessels also pushes fluid out into the area under the eyes, making it puffy. The shadow cast by this puffiness can enhance the dark circles.

Excessive crying or stress: Stress removes blood from the face to other parts of the body, causing the face to appear pale and making the blood vessels under the eyes more apparent.

Lifestyle: Excessive smoking or drinking dehydrate the skin and helps in the appearance of dark circles. Moreover, smoking and drinking may also impair sleep and this may also cause dark circles.

Diet: Dark circles can also be caused by the lack of nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and lycopene in a person’s diet.

Conditions: Like dermal melanin deposition, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and atrophic dermatitis also cause dark circles.

Face yoga exercises to treat dark circles:

  • The Victory Sign:

Make a V with your index finger on the outer corner and your middle finger on the inner corner of the eye from under both eyes.

Then, simultaneously apply very light pressure and press fingers down.

Look up with your eyes without wrinkling your forehead.

Squint your eyes slightly and hold for 10 to 15 seconds.

This exercise will help relieve puffiness and dark circles from under your eyes.

  • Tap around your eyes:

Starting from the inner corner, gently tap around your eyes with your index finger.

Move from inside to outside in a circular fashion and repeat this exercise 10 to 15 times.

This will improve blood circulation to the area and help lighten the dark circles.

  • Pull back:

To do this exercise, place your index finger on the eyebrow and your middle finger below your eye.

Start pulling the fingers back towards the hairline while applying slight pressure.

While you are pulling the fingers backward, keep reducing the gap between your fingers and make sure they are touching when your fingers reach the hairline.

Repeat these steps 3 to 5 times.

  • Under-eye hook:

Bend both index and middle fingers and place them under your eyes.

Move outwards, upwards and inwards while applying slight pressure on your skin.

Repeat this exercise 20 times.

  • Closed eye movements:

Start by closing both your eyes, then roll them towards the right and towards the top in a circular fashion. Repeat this exercise 10 times.

  • Open eye movement:

Keeping your eyes open, move them in a rolling motion from left to right.

Repeat this exercise 10 times.

Yoga poses for getting rid of dark circles:

The following full body yoga poses can also help to remove dark circles from under your eyes.

  • Hastapadotasana:

To do this yoga pose, start by standing straight. Then slowly stretch your hands upwards and bend your body forward so that your palms touch the floor and your head touches your knees. Hold in this position for 10 to 15 seconds.

This pose helps stretch muscles all over the body while increasing blood flow to the face. This increased blood flow helps reduce dark circles.

  • Singhasana:

Start by folding your knees and slowly sitting down, placing your hips on the heels of your feet. Keeping your back straight, inhale deeply. Then exhale and while exhaling, push out your eyes and tongue. Hold this posture for 30 seconds.

  • Parvatasana:

For this pose, put your hands on the ground. With both hands and feet firmly on the ground, lift your whole body. Do this until your pose resembles that of a mountain. Hold for 30 seconds.

Face yoga for dark circles is a simple alternative to cosmetics and costly treatments and can give you exceptional results if done daily. You must also try to improve your sleeping habits, diet, and lifestyle so that dark circles do not develop in the first place. However, if the condition does not go away even after regularly following face yoga for dark circles, you should consult a dermatologist.
