It’s impossible to ignore a migraine.

When they come around, you will have difficulty concentrating on anything other than the pain. You know how it feels, right? Feels like your head is being ripped apart.

It is an intense pain and has other unrelatable sensations thrown in. These are unpredictable, leaving you helpless as they rip apart your life. But what causes them? Are there any ways to reduce the severity of migraine or even some prevention?

Let’s take a look at the treatments for migraines available to you.

Use of Pain Reliever

You can take a pain reliever before or during the migraine. This, of course, depends on its characteristics. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Ibuprofen, can be taken to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.

These must be taken with food to prevent stomach upset. Other NSAIDs, such as Naproxen, can also be prescribed. A combination of acetaminophen and caffeine should be taken for mild forms of migraine.

Take Triptans

Triptans stimulate serotonin receptors which cause the narrowing of blood vessels around the brain. This also reduces inflammation and has side effects such as:

  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • pressure headaches
  • tightness in the chest
  • sweating
  • joint or muscle pain

Triptans can be an effective treatment for those suffering from recurrent and severe migraines. It has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the intensity of headache pain.

Take Dihydroergotamine

Dihydroergotamine (DHE) is an effective treatment for migraines. It is an ergot alkaloid derived from Ergometrine and is administered in either tablet or nasal spray.

It helps decrease inflammation, reduces swelling, and releases certain chemical substances that can cause pain. It is prescribed for patients who have failed treatments or have frequent headaches.

Avoid Certain Foods

Certain foods are known to trigger migraines. These include anything pickled, chocolate, red wine, MSG, processed deli meats, cured meats such as salami, processed cheese, foods containing Aspartame, and food that contains tyramine such as aged cheeses and smoked fish.

It is essential to prevent future migraine headaches by keeping track of what you eat and avoiding these migraine-triggering foods.

Apply Lavender Oil

Applying lavender oil is a calming and soothing effect that helps to reduce the severity of a migraine. It also helps muscles in the head and in the neck to relax. This helps reduce the tension that generally causes a migraine.

Lavender oil also reduces inflammation associated with migraine. Its aroma also helps to relieve pain. It is essential to dilute the oil as the scent can be too strong. This might trigger a migraine later on.

Try Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a way of inserting thin needles into the points of the body. The needles revitalize the body to release hormones. It also activates certain points in the body.

It is also non-invasive and does not involve any use of medication. However, it requires enough training and attention when doing the procedures.
